Rocket Visits Elkhorn Station and Delivers An Early Christmas Present to Wayne

Rocket made a stop in Elkhorn last week to thank Elkhorn Station's Main Street board for their hard work this past year.  Everyone celebrated with warm turkey soup at the Heartland Cafe.

Rocket also delivered an early Christmas present to Main Street Wayne...their new Main Street highway signs.  Mr. Blecke was very happy to receive the new signs that will be put up on Highway 35 and on Highway 15 letting visitors know that they're entering a Heritage Nebraska Main Street Community!

November 19, 2009 it was a 630 mile journey and 14.5 hour day today in meetings with the Downtown BID/Main Street board in Grand Island and a Listen and Learn Session in Ogallala with our friends in community development in the Panhandle.  Boy was it good to see our friends and meet some new ones! Thank you JL for your endurance driving skills.  I think we're three tired puppies!

Rocket is a road warrior.

He was adopted at Cumberland's in downtown Geneva. Ms. Patty, the proprietor of the world-class women's store, had him on a shelf with the Life is Good collection. We knew this was a perfect travel companion to help us tell the Heritage Nebraska Main Street story.

He is a quick learner. He is meeting Main Street people across the state and getting his picture taken with Board Members and Managers. He took his first “road trip” to the Panhandle and back, a 1,300 - mile trek into the beautiful Nebraska Sandhills sitting front and center on the dash of the Cadillac SRX. The only time he bailed was when we stopped suddenly to avoid hitting two young deer who wandered onto Highway 20 near Long Pine at 8 in the morning.

Far from that excitement, he patiently sat through 90 minutes of his first Main Street Advisory Committee meeting and then agreed to pose for a picture with the committee.

Life on the road can be grueling. There are long days. It takes a while to get across this wide state. There are lots of sunsets and moon-rises [it was a full moon between Alliance and Valentine on his first trip at night]. Likewise, there are lots of sunrises and they are especially beautiful in the vast open spaces we call Nebraska.

Rocket met Main Street Advisory Committee Chair Kathy Zeller way out in Ogallala. She showed him a map of the United States and pointed out where Ogallala sits on that map, slightly west of the halfway point between the coasts.

Rocket met Main Street Manager Chelsie Herian in Historic Downtown Alliance. She read him the list of Christmas activities and he was especially interested in the Santa House which is being placed in a new location at the corner of Box Butte and Third this year.

Rocket spends days in Main Street Director Elizabeth Chase’s office in the historic Mill Towne Building at the south edge of the Haymarket in Lincoln.

Good doggie. Sit. Stay.
